Beef and Rice

Beef and rice are two simple bases to tons of different meals.  Honestly, start with these two and then use your imagination.  You can go in any direction you want, and use almost any type of flavor, sauce, veggies that you want.

I’m always a sucker for soy sauce, so I went with a teriyaki-ish style beef.

Ingredients:

  • Beef cut into strips.
  • rice.
  • veggies.
  • garlic powder.
  • cinnamon sugar.
  • ginger.
  • lemon pepper.
  • soy sauce.
  • rice vinegar.
  • flour.
  • oil.

First, cut up the meat the way you want it cut.  I went for thin strips this time.  The key is to make sure however you cut it, you cut it all the same size.  This ensures that it will all cook evenly.  After the meat is cut, combine the seasoning in a bowl.  The seasoning will be mostly flour followed by garlic powder then ginger and the other spices.  That will be personal preference.  There’s no need to dredge the beef – just toss ’em in the bowl and get ’em covered.  After they are covered, put them in the frying pan with some oil.  Cook all of the meat up, and then remove the meat from the pan – but leave all the goodies the meat leaves behind.

We’ll be using the goodies left behind to the make the sauce.  Like any sauce and gravy, in the pan you cooked the meat in, add in flour and water, soy sauce, vinegar (sparingly), and other spices.  Make it as thick or as liquid as you like.  Remember to keep the heat high to get the sauce bubbling to thicken it up.  There’s plenty of entries in this blog about sauce and gravies!  If you want, you can add some Gravy Master as well.  You could also add beef stock / bullion.

While the gravy is bubbling and getting awesome, you can cook up your veggies.  The veggies are your choice, as well.  I like peppers with steak and love corn so it was a no brainer for me.  Depending on what kind of rice you like, you may need to make that while the gravy is being made  or earlier.  It’s up to you also if you even want the gravy or not – this is totally edible without it.

  1. Looks great Nick! I feel like this would be a great thing to have during the week. Seems like an easy meal to whip up on a weeknight!
